Affordable Housing for OCLT, Cumnor

The practice secured planning on this backfield site on behalf of Oxford Community Land Trust, and subsequently completed a fully detailed design for this scheme for six affordable flats in Cumnor.

OCLT have been working for a number of years to carry out a community led development in the area, and acquired their first site in 2008.

There were a number of complex issues affecting planning, including access, parking and some local opposition. The practice were successful in resolving these and, following a community consultation held in in collaboration with tangentstudio, the project was granted full Planning Approval

The design is for an energy efficient, highly sustainable compact arrangement of six flats arranged over two floors; the mix includes studio, 1 bed and 2 bed flats.  Design standards include Passivhaus levels of insulation and airtightness, and the proposal incorporates Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery along with a large area of solar panels on the south facing roof.

Construction is of timber frame using a prefabricated Structural Insulated Panel System, clad in cedar boarding under a low maintenance metal roof.

Once completed, tenants will be selected from amongst those with local connections, and will manage the flats as a co-operative with OCLT's supervision.
