what we do
It seems obvious, but we really do care about the architecture that we create and the buildings we work on. When asked what kinds of buildings we 'do', we instead talk about the type of people that we work with. We practice an architecture of 'appropriateness', based on an understanding of the needs of the Client grown from building personal face-to-face relationships.
We believe in meaningful consultation, about listening and responding in a reflective way. Schemes are developed through discussion and exploration of ideas to maximise possibilities and unlock potential. We aim to add delight to each project.
The Practice has experience with helping clients who want to build, who feel that their proposals would be beneficial to the community, but who have faced difficulties and opposition to development. This is particularly true of community and charitable groups.
We do a range of work for different clients and we have a strong team with multidisciplinary skills. Below you can find more information about some of the things we do in addition to our architectural projects.

project appraisals and feasibility
Our experience with development and familiarity with grants and funding bodies places the practice in a unique position to help Clients evaluate the suitability of potential sites.
Askew Cavanna Architects have worked with Land Trusts and developers to impartially analyse the opportunities and constraints of sites, and our input has been of great value to them in reaching a decision. The service we offer is tailored to the project, but typically comprises a desktop study of issues such as:
planning history and conditions
recommendation of surveys and consultants required
analysis of information available
programme and procurement
outline cost advice

teaching and lecturing
The studio enjoys an active involvement with architectural education. We have strong links with UWE, through teaching and also through their summer internship schemes at all levels.
We are an enthusiastic team, with a strong emphasis on personal and professional development. Within the office we have a project-oriented CPD programme, and hold reviews with external experts and similar practices.
Chris is a visiting tutor and lecturer at London Metropolitan University. He also delivers lectures on aspects of practice management at venues from Falmouth to Cambridge for Universities and for RIBA regions. Since the mid 90′s Chris has been a Part III examiner, examining at Bath University, UWE, University of Central England (BCU), Plymouth, and Cardiff.
events
We work flexibly and get stuck into all sorts of things that interest us, in addition to building design work. This has included organising and running Bristol's first Global Service Jam, and a very successful Pecha Kucha event.
Other groups we are actively involved with include:
Bristol Green Capital
Constructing Excellence
G4C South West
BCC Planning User Group
